PARIS (AP): Simone de Beauvoir, philosopher, author and feminist,
was buried Saturday in the Montparnasse Cemetery, her body placed in the
same tomb as Jean-Paul Sartre, her companion for 50 years.
About 2,000 people paid homage to Miss de Beauvoir, who died Monday
at the age of 78. The burial followed a funeral procession, led by
women, from the Cohin Hospital where she died.
The women sang ″Debout Femmes Esclaves″ - ″On Your Feet Women Slaves.″
At the cemetery, film director Claude Lanzmann read the eulogy, and
said that although Miss de Beauvoir will rest eternally beside Sartre,
the existentialist philosopher, she once said, ″My death will not
reunite us.″ Sartre died six years ago.
American feminist Kate Millet, who was among the mourners, said, ″I
feel the death of Simone de Beauvoir very strongly ... but I feel it as
so many women who never knew her feel it too."
Miss Millet, a friend of Miss de Beauvoir for 16 years, said, ″This
is an opportunity to honor a great woman ... she contributed so greatly
to our freedom." (
